Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (H. Fraser, OMAFRA)
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (H. Fraser, OMAFRA)

We are starting our 2014 field survey for the new invasive insect pest, brown marmorated stink bug.  In particular, we are looking for corn and soybean fields that meet the criteria below.  We will scout for the pest within the first 30 rows of field (where we expect to first find the insect), as well as any other hosts that are in the treeline of the fields.

We need corn or soybean fields that meets one or more of these criteria:

  • Field bordered by trees (buckthorn, maples, oaks, elms, cedars, hawthorn etc)
  • Field immediately borders other horticultural crops (apple orchard, pear orchard, peach orchard, peppers, tomatoes, snap beans, lima beans, grapes, raspberries, blueberries)
  • Field is in close proximity to tourist location (ie. campground, Provincial Park, EnRoute service centre, truck stop, tourist destinations etc)
  • Field is in close proximity to the boundaries of the following towns/cities where BMSB has been found overwintering in homes: Windsor, Cedar Springs, London, Hamilton, Kincardine, Paris and Guelph

If you know of fields that meet these criteria, please email us at: onpeststudy14@gmail.com

Thanks, Tracey
