Heard from two credible sources that soybean aphids are on VC and V1 stage soybeans at London’s AAFC (North East side of London) as well as a few fields in Eastern Ontario and Southern Quebec. I will be doing a more thorough search this afternoon North of London too to see how widespread the aphids are colonizing in that area. No high…
Chris DiFonzo just notified me that she has found soybean aphids on early planted soybeans in Michigan. This is a very good indication that Ontario could have aphids on any soys that have emerged. Try to get out and scout fields between the rains this week. If anyone finds fields with aphids in them, please notify me as we are trying…
On the conference call with my US counterparts yesterday, it was mentioned that fields in NE Iowa are starting to see soybean aphids colonize soybeans there. This is a good indication that once our soys are emerging we should be scouting fields once a week to monitor for aphids. Particularly those4 fields that are first to emerge in the area.
The first report of spraying for armyworm in sweet corn in Essex County came in today. We are not sure how heavy of infestation to expect in other fields but wheat and newly emerging corn fields should be scouted in Essex, Chatham-Kent, Lambton, Elgin and Middlesex counties asap. Armyworm reports from Essex tend to give us a few days heads-up…
Thanks for the Heads-up Bob Buis! Bob reports that he has seen a field with 5% of the plants cut by cutworm in the Lighthouse Cove (Tilbury) area. Cutting indicates that the cutworm larvae are bigger and more mature and may be difficult to control. Now that corn fields are emerging, they need to be scouted every 5 days for leaf feeding…
Since there is not much crop up yet to spot feeding injury on, there really is not much happening yet on the insect front. However, anyone that did push planting and planted into too wet or cool soils, or deep planted may start seeing some issues when the crops starts to emerge. Millipedes and slugs in particular could be a…
Alfalfa Weevil – We are starting to see a lot more alfalfa weevil larvae in the fields we are scouting. Many fields in southwestern Ontario are ready or close to being ready to be cut. I know you are busy trying to get everything planted finally, but I encourage guys to get out and cut the hay (if field is ready) to reduce the risk of…
I’m heading out to the fields today so I will have more to report on tonight. But at the breakfast meeting yesterday a question about a product label came up and I thought it would be handy to provide you with the link to PMRA’s Label Search Site at: http://pr-rp.pmra-arla.gc.ca/portal/page?_pageid=34,17551&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL Use the drop down menu to select “Product Name” or…
Just in case some of you are keen and plan to be scotuing this long weekend, there are a few critters you should be watching for. Alfalfa weevil (AW) larvae are starting in some fields. So far just the smaller 1st and 2nd instars but warmer weather will help them grow too. Stay ahead of any infestations by scouting the…
You found it! Yes, it is me, Tracey…just in case you were wondering if there could be another Baute out there that is a bug geek. Maybe there is but I beat them to the blog name. After 9 years on the job (wow..9 years), I’ve learned that when pest infestations start up, you guys need and want to know about them…
