New! ‘Crop Chat’ videos on Field Crop News
Check out Crop Chats at https://fieldcropnews.com/crop-chats, recently launched at the OSCIA/OMAFA tent during Canadas Outdoor Farm Show. Crop Chats are a series of video case studies showcasing Ontario farmers and agri-business people doing interesting and innovative things to enhance their farm operations’ efficiency and profitability.
The first video series is Winning with Notill brings together several farmers who have had success at reducing or eliminating tillage from their operations. They have realized increased profitability and lower operational costs, including equipment, fuel, and labour.
The second video series is Seeding Equipment Decisions and features a group of farmers discussing how they decide on new seeding equipment, and why they have the planting units they do. Watch for new Crop Chats series in future.
Fall is busy but scouting opportunities exist if you take advantage of them now!
Harvest is fast approaching. Lots of acres across the province are custom sprayed and harvested. Outsourcing these key jobs can distance the farmer from what is happening in the field after the crop is established. Farmers who rely on custom operators should be more proactive in their scouting to stay ahead of issues, since they are not running equipment across the field themselves.
To target fall scouting, ask your equipment operator which fields have problems that should be checked out. Marking these problem areas on a map can be valuable.
After harvest, ask your custom operator for the yield maps from the combine. These can be important scouting aids.

Satellite or UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery taken as soybean fields mature is an excellent tool to scan for crop/soil differences that can be followed up with manual scouted to determine the cause. In this case sites 1 and 2 are within a third of a mile (half km) but the landscape topography differences are significant. In a wet year like 2024, much of the observed differences may be rainfall or disease effects, but in other years soil pH, insects, tillage or weed pressure may be the culprit, but you cannot determine the cause without direct examination of the physical locations in the field. Aerial image scouting tools helps you zero-in on where to focus in-field scouting or sampling efforts.

Following on last week’s Crop Report, we want to reiterate the importance of fall weed control in your overall system. Relying solely on spring weed control can be problematic in an era of increasing weed resistance.
Getting on problems this fall will reduce the workload next spring and set you up for more success by being on top of things going into spring. This includes weed control. Do not miss the opportunity for fall scouting to identify and fix problems.
