The Great Lakes and Maritimes Pest Monitoring Network (GLMPMN) website has been upgraded and has a new permanent link: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/7164d23d488246d198dcf7a07d8c9021 Please bookmark this new link and use it going forward to enter any trap sites and trap data. The same link should work well for both desktop browsers and mobile devices. Everything is still the same in terms of how you add trap sites and enter weekly trap counts. A few additional questions have been added to the trap site or weekly counts surveys including what trap type and lure brand is being used as well as if there were any bycatch (non-target insects found in the trap too) that week. These are not mandatory but help us gather more data to better understand trap, lure and pest dynamics across the network. This upgraded site also contains past years’ trap data so we can compare pest levels over years. 2023 is currently the only past year on the sites but other past years will be added overtime. A big thanks to Dan Bihari, Senior GIS specialist at OMAFRA for building the updated site and running the system for us this year while Jen Birchmore is away on secondment.
The Great Lakes and Maritimes Pest Monitoring Network is a collaboration of state and provincial reps from Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Connecticut, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. We are grateful for all of the crop consultants, scouts, extension personnel, farmers and researchers across this region that monitor these traps and send in their weekly trap counts.
Like always, anyone is welcome to set up a trap and enter the trap data into the network. Traps set up in any crops being monitored for black cutworm (BCW), true armyworm (TAW), European corn borer (ECB), western bean cutworm (WBC), corn earworm (CEW) or fall armyworm (FAW) can be included. If your crop is not listed in trap site info popup, click on “Other” to fill in what crop you are monitoring.

How to Add a Trap Site to the Network:
- Go to the GLMPMN site at: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/7164d23d488246d198dcf7a07d8c9021
- There are Step-by-step instructions on the “Instructions” tab if these instruction below are not thorough enough.
- To set up a new Trap Site in the network, go to the “Moth Counts’ Tab and click on the “Add a Trap Location” button on the top left side of the page. It looks like a notebook with a check mark on it. A pop up window titled “GLMPMN – Add a Trap Location” will appear.
- Desktop Users: Your computer won’t have GPS, so you’ll have to navigate the popup map to where your trap site is and click the spot with your mouse to place a location pin.
- Mobile Users: Click on the bullseye (or gun scope) button so that the site can navigate to where your phone currently is on the map. You may be asked to allow the site to access your GPS. If you are not at the trap site, you can navigate the map using your fingers and find the trap site location. Touch the screen where the trap site is to add a location pin. Hit OK to save the location.
- Scroll down and fill in a “Trap Name”, “Email”, “Pest”, “Crop”, “Type of Trap Used”, “Lure Brand”, “State/Province”, and “Can we share your trap data”. It is always best to use an email address that is functioning year round in case we need to contact you to correct any data errors or send you annual reports.
- When finished entering the trap site information, hit “Submit”. Your trap site has been added to the system and should show up as a dot on the map.
How to Enter Weekly Trap Counts
- Each week, return to your trap site dot(s) on the map under the “Moth Counts” Tab.
- A pop-up window will appear that summarizes all of the data that has been entered so far for the site. Make sure your trap site name is at the top of the pop up window before you add your weekly data.
- Scroll passed the table in the pop up and click HERE to add moth counts.
- A new screen will open up titled “Add Moth Counts”. Enter the date the trap was checked and how many moths were captured.
- If there were any bycatch (unintended, non-target insects captured – eg. Spongy moths or bees), enter what was captured and how many there were. You can add as many different bycatch types as you want.
- Once completed, hit “Submit”.
Pest Maps and Dashboard
To see weekly maps, go to the tab for the pest you are interested in. To look at the pest data in more detail, go to the Dashboard where you can filter to the pest of interest, crop, state/province, time period and year. You can zoom in and out of the map and the data will change accordingly.
