June 2019 Forage Report

Southwestern

  • First cut began the first week of June. Reports indicate yields are average or below-average.
  • According to AAFC, areas of Huron, Perth, Wellington, and Waterloo received 60-85% of average precipitation for June. Parts of Bruce, Grey, Essex, Chatham-Kent, Norfolk, Haldimand, and Niagara had 115-150% of average rainfall this past month. The rest of southwestern Ontario received average amounts of rainfall for June. Without long windows of dry weather, most of first cut has been put up as silage or in wrapped bales.
  • Continued scouting for alfalfa weevil is recommended, especially in fields not to be harvested soon. Scouting information can be found on pages 339 and 340 of OMAFRA Pub. 811: Agronomy Guide for Field Crops.
  • Grey leaf spot is being found in older alfalfa stands.  Fungicide applications can be made 10 days after cutting to provide protection from any inoculant left in the field. PHI is 14 days.

Central and Eastern

  • First cut began the second week of June. Reports indicate yields are average or below average.
  • According to AAFC, areas in Durham and York received 115-150% of average rainfall; parts of Prescott & Russell, Leeds & Grenville, and Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry had 60-85% of average precipitation. The rest of the region had average rainfall for June. Without long windows of dry weather, most of first cut has been put up as silage or in wrapped bales.
  • Some potato leafhopper has been found in alfalfa fields in eastern Ontario. Scouting information can be found on pages 341 and 342 of OMAFRA Pub. 811: Agronomy Guide for Field Crops.

Northeastern

  • First cut began about a week later than normal across the region. Yield is variable.
  • Grass development is ahead of legumes, with alfalfa just budding in Temiskaming District.
  • According to AAFC, areas of Algoma, Manitoulin, Temiskaming, Cochrane, and Muskoka received 115-150% of average rainfall. Part of Nipissing District had 60-85% of average precipitation. The rest of the northeast received average rainfall for June.

Northwestern

  • First cut started the second week of June, about one week later than normal.
  • Grass development is ahead of legumes, with alfalfa entering early bloom in Rainy River District.
  • According to AAFC, part of Thunder Bay District received average rainfall for June, while the rest of the region had below-average levels of precipitation.
